Body type
Five-door supermini
Battery options
22kWh (early cars), 41kWh (from 2017) and 52kWh (from 2019).
Real-world range
Varies a lot by battery size – the 52kWh cars offer the most useful range.
Charging speeds
Home and public AC charging via Type 2. DC rapid charging (CCS) is only fitted to some later cars – check before you buy.

Later cars with an owned battery were covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Leased batteries are covered under the lease.

What to check

  • Is the battery owned or leased? Many older Zoes came with a monthly battery lease. That can make a cheap car cost more overall. Check whether the lease has been bought out, or ask Renault about buying it out.
  • Get an independent battery health check. Repeated rapid charging can wear older battery designs.
  • Check for rapid charging (CCS) if you need it – not every Zoe has it.
  • Look for signs of fleet or car-club use, such as scuffs, a worn interior or poor repairs.
  • Make sure the service history and charging cables are present.

Known issues

  • The facelifted Zoe scored zero stars in Euro NCAP safety testing.
  • Older battery designs can lose range faster with heavy rapid charging.

Pros

  • Cheap to buy
  • Easy to find
  • Comfortable around town
  • 52kWh cars have useful range

Cons

  • Battery lease on many older cars
  • Not all cars have rapid charging
  • Zero-star Euro NCAP rating for the facelifted car

Is a used Renault Zoe a good buy?

The Zoe is one of the cheapest ways into electric driving, and it's easy to find on the used market. The catch is the battery lease.

Owned or leased battery?

Renault originally sold the Zoe with the battery leased separately, for a monthly fee. Cars with a leased battery look cheaper to buy, but the lease adds an ongoing cost. Over time, that can wipe out the saving. Always check, and consider buying the lease out.

Which Zoe to choose

For most buyers, a 52kWh car with an owned battery is the best bet. Check whether it has CCS rapid charging if you'll use it on longer trips.
